Session Description: Extending one's sense of self in the form of abstract representation is one of the most fundamental expressions of humanity (Bailenson and Beall). But avatars aren't effective by themselves. You need to make your Collaborative Virtual Environment the most effective experience possible by learning how to customize avatars in Second Life to fulfill your educational and communication goals. Join us for some tips on designing avatars in virtual spaces!

 

  • Practice customizing up to three avatar looks
  • How does an avatar's physical appearance affect social interaction?
  • Space design practices for optimal learning experience

 

Led by: Montse Anderson - 3-D Designer

 

Montse Anderson, a new media and marketing professional with a Master of Arts in Organizational Management, is busy exploring the educational implications of collaborative and shared virtual environments. She is also faculty at both Arizona State University and Axia College of University of Phoenix. When she is not indulging her passion for education, Montse is busy working as Director for It's Oque, a full service company that develops virtual communities in Second Life for corporations. In her spare time, Montse greatly enjoys photography and painting. She has exhibited her work at the Alwun House in Phoenix.

    Jodi Shannon:It was an interesting concept. Unfortunately, you had too many technical issues. Providing a list of steps to perform in order to get to dressing your character would have been helpful. I am very interested in learning more about the 2nd life. There are so many social issues involved in an alternate world that I'd like to discuss with the world creators.
