Session Description: How we structure and govern learning really matters!!! Engaging stakeholders, managing suppliers and building a healthy and effective organizational structure for learning may be the most important challenge for our field. Who you report to - and who THEY report to - can make a big difference in how effective your learning activities turn out to be. Explore and compare various organizational structures and the pros and cons of each.
FYI - I'll be posting the discussion and any results here after the session.
Questions now? - MC2
Session notes:
We had about 25 people in the session, to be honest tis was more than I expected given the subject. But we had an interactive discussion. A quick summary...
What organizational structure do you currently have?
Centralized = 8
Decentralized = 8
Federated = 13
Our discussion centered around pros and cons for each and just what mix of central and distributed made for a federated descriprion. The result: it depends, often for reasons of legacy and politics rather than conscious decision.
Where are you located functionally?
HR = 10
Operations = 5
IT = 2
Executive Office = 2
Sales/Marketing = 2
Other/not sure = 1
The core of the discussion was about governance structure(s). About half of the group had some kind of learning governance structure, the other half did not. Those who did ranged from those based on informal realtionships/case-by-case negotiation all the way out to two-tier formalisms, with senior leadersip and formal working groups/agendas.
Many others were in the process of considering whether/how to set up formal governance. Hopefully the discussion provided useful input to those deliberations.
Thanks again to all the participants. I had a great time.
