Session Description: This brave new flat world has borders, boundaries and barriers. Major US organizations have large employee bodies in India, single team members who are based in India, or employees who have recently arrived in the US from India.In order to be much more successful, we will together explore the cultural, communication, team building, leadership and business practice differences between the US and India to understand with open minds what we share in common and what is truly different between these cultures.

Led by: Deepak Sethi - Organic Leadership

 

Deepak ( Dick ) Sethi is the CEO of Organic Leadership, a unique consulting organization based in NJ that specialized in innovative approaches to leadership development, talent management and leadership audit. Previously, Dick held very senior positions in leadership development and talent management at leading US organizations, including AT&T and Thomson. He is a recognized authority in this field and has given many talks and written several articles on the subject.

    Laurie Pankow:Summary of Dick's session: I. Session opened with an overview of "The World Is Flat" authored by Tom Friedman. His work analyzes globalization and complex core business concepts. II. Overview of misconceptions: a. India is large (landwise it is a 1/3 the land mass of North America while hosting 3x the US population) b. India is poor (the middle and upper classes are larger than the US population) III. India is full of contradictions a. OLD vs. NEW 1. The culture embraces new technologies, infrastructure and business practices while respecting traditional formats b. Co-Existence 1. The culture welcomes 'new' without giving up 'old' (ex. modern cars navigate on roads alongside cows) IV. Business challenges a. Global companies continue to expand or outsource to India (business cases need to be refined to consider all criteria and potential associated program costs) b. Candidate talent pool is highly competitive 1. wages are steadily increasing (affecting business case to offshore) 2. employee retention is at-risk c. Companies outsource to Indian firms who may then outsource the project to yet another entity 1. security and proprietary risks d.
