Session Number: 238

Session Title: Using e-Learning to Teach Soft Skills: Not an Oxymoron

Room Location: Fiesta 9

Day and Time: Monday, 11:15am - 12:15pm

Session Format: Learning Story

Led by: Louis Biggie - Associate Director, Learning Solutions - Johns Hopkins University

Session Description: Soft skills training often involves telling our learners what to do, but that misses the point. Learners usually know what to do, but they don't know how to do it. We will discuss how e-Learning can model the kinds of interpersonal behaviors we hope to teach. We will show three examples that we have used at Johns Hopkins University. Please join us with your own examples and ideas.

*: Assumption: e-Learning is inappropriate for soft skills

*: Problem: soft skills training tends to focus on what to do - not how to do it

*: Possible solution: use rich media in e-Learning to model the desired behaviors
