Session Description: Accenture Education is developing "myLearning Mobile" to enable our executives to use their Blackberry or Windows Mobile device for learning and performance support. Our focus is to leverage our executives' naturally occurring down time to complete compliance training and to provide point-of-need information - both through using mobile technology. Accenture Education's story of our journey into mobile learning includes using a phased approach to navigate mobile challenges of content design, user interaction, technical considerations and LMS integration. Join us for early lessons learned along our journey into mobile learning!

  • Leveraging mobile technology for training and performance support
  • Navigating the complexity of designing and deploying mobile learning solutions
  • Leveraging mobile technology to address at least two of the five moments of need

POST SESSION UPDATE

Thanks to all who attended this session.  I was energized by the level of interest and excitement around the use of mobile devices for training and performance support.  Here is more background on what we learned with our 12 screen prototype.

We demonstrated our prototype and learned:

88% would use a mobile device for training

69% prefer less than 20 minutes chunks of content

Over 50% would use this in a location requiring a downloaded version (our prototype is a live version)

We tested the prototype remotely and learned:

50% had a “better than expected” experience with the prototype

92% would use a mobile device for training

42% prefer 15 - 20 minute chunks of content

83% indicated that cost of airtime would not be a constraint to using their mobile device to complete training

High-level Challenges

Target Audience challenges

  • Will our people use it?
  • Not all employees have devices (one implication is multi-channel distribution/maintenance of courses)

Instructional challenges

  • Would the CBT and mobile versions produce similar learning outcomes?
  • Could online course activities be effectively created for mobile?
  • Could we convert our one hour online courses into 20 minute chunks?

Technical challenges

  • Implications of multiple platforms (Palm OS, WM5, Blackberry, etc.)
  • Challenges of varying screen size and resolution
  • How to provide a download solution given unknown device memory size

LMS integration challenges

  • How to provide a seamless user experience for enrollment
  • How to track completion

Dana Alan Koch:Hi Linda... great question. We do not believe that the Mobile platform will be relevant for all content. The obvious target for us was our corporate required training... in part because our senior executives are really supposed to take it. We felt that if we could offer it in this format as an alternate format the course would be more convenient. I don't know if you attended Kris Swanson's session (he has posted his deck), but he had some very good statistics about how the mobile platform also saved time (and money). In many ways this is more about the business case rather than the specific content. Ann... I will be posting the deck in the next few days.
Ann Schulte:Hi Dana...will you be posting your presentation? I have misplaced the scrap of paper with your email...Thx Ann
Linda Al Ansari:Dana - I'm really interested to know how you define the type of content which is relevant enough to pull executives away from the "email" frenzy of the Blackberry. For example what do you define as point-of-need information? We have all our senior execs issued with Blackberry devices but have held back on using them for anything other than email due to the perceived pressure on time and the prevailing view that the device is issued so as to support "operationally critical decision making". I'd be interested in your views as to how this can be overcome with relevant content. Linda
