Session Title: What Does the Research Tell Us/Not Tell Us About Virtual Learning?

Session Number: 150

Room: Acapulco

Day and Timeslot: Monday - 9:45am to 11:45am

Formats: Learning Story

Session Description: Virtual learning in both asynchronous and synchronous forms has been around for many years now, but is it effective? Does it make a difference in terms of people's comprehension and retention, or does it impact other learning metrics? What does published literature tell us about virtual learning and what is not being reported that we need to know about its effectiveness? Is there a significant difference in learning outcome that is dependent on delivery modality?

  • What research tells us about virtual learning
  • What the research does not tell us about virtual learning
  • What we need the research to report on in the coming months/years

Lesly Wilson:This is was an excellent discussion. I most enjoyed the discussion surrounding social interaction. It was reassuring to hear that learning in virtual environments produces increased amounts of social interaction among learners. The virtual environment allows the introverted person opportunity to participate and interact through an nonthreatening medium. My questions to the learning community would be: What is considered the standard measure for social interaction in the face to face learning environment? and How much social interaction really does occur in the face to face learning environment? The virtual environment tracks the interactions of each participant and through group activities fosters contributions by each member, which are visible. Really enjoyed this discussion.

Jim Wexler:Is virtual learning effective? Of course! There are several great studies out there that have proven that learning in virtual/Sim environments leads to improved test scores, higher retention rates and decreases in training hour. Not to mention overall Employee Engagment! Solid data demonstrates the power of virtual learning across a wide range of industries including healthcare, defense, retail sales, trucking, etc... Looking forward to discussing on Monday...
