We engaged in an interactive benchmarking dialogue with other colleagues from the Energy field in this special MyIndustry Learning User Group. Thanks to the 20+ who participated: please add your comments. We compared notes about how "Learning is Changing", including

  • As the energy industry picks up its pace, how can we disseminate a lot of knowledge efficiently and effectively? What learning styles and techniques are most appropriate?
  • How can we improve collaboration and sharing both within our organizations and between them in the Engergy Industry?
  • What opportunities are there in new technologies, such as mobile learning, gaming/simulations, collaboration rooms, and mapping and satellite data for context-related support?

Shelah Mabeus:Thanks to the presenters for a great session! In the conversation, I was asked to post some information about a self-directed team that we have started. I am with Pioneer Natural Resources and can be reached by clicking on my name in the listing. The self-directed group that we started is called the PILOT group (Pioneering Innovative Leaders of Tomorrow), composed of petrotechs with 0-7 years of industry experience. They meet twice per year for several days for leadership and business acumen development. In addition, they meet every month to hear presentations from leaders in the company and share thoughts/concerns/general comments. They are governed much like a non-profit, with a group of volunteers who organize events, topics, development activities. The monthly meetings are held by video conferencing so that those in remote locations can participate. They have a page for their group on our company portal and they are self-governing, with a small budget for their activities. This is an experiment in developing our GenY and Nexters - letting them control the content of their sessions and plan for development. It also gives our Management Team the ability to spot potential leaders among the group. if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Michael Reakes:Collaboration & Sharing: the following collaboration organizations and methods were mentionsed: (1) Petroskills; (2) Allia; (3) Society of Petroleum Geologists; (4) PEICE; (5) NEXT; (6) API University; (7) Skillsoft. Participants: please correct and add web URLs as appropriate. At the session there was a query on the availability of learning materials for US Federal Energy Regulatory Compliance.
Michael Reakes:Methods and Media: oil industry participants in our session were asked their predominant methods and media. Most still use classroom instruction.
